Lacul Roșu (the Red Lake) is a mountainous balneal and thermal resort situated near the town of Gheorgheni, at a height of 980 m. The name of the resort comes from the natural dam lake that was formed at the foot of Mount Ghilcoș, after a landslide swept the Bicaz Valley basin. Some tree trunks covered by waters still testify today to that phenomenon. The mountain slopes that surround the resort (Suhard, Tarcău, Hășmaș, and Giurgeu) provide shelter against strong winds and keep the annual temperature relatively low (6 degrees C). In winter, sky slopes are available for tourists. In summer, trekking and mountain climbing are possible on the cliffs in the Bicaz Gorges area, which is only 5 km away from the resort. The stimulating climate of this resort is recommended in the treatment of stress related problems.
